Cherries, variety “Imperiale”

P1000530Yum yum! Growers in the village sell these at the road side, though this year the crop hasn’t been as good as usual.

As a sign of how France’s agriculture and country livelihoods have changed, a generation ago, there were some 20 separate cherry producers in this village alone – Belgentier was famous for its cherries – and their stalls were lined up outside the village selling on the road. Nowadays, you will only find the head of the village boar hunt and his wife sitting at their table in the lay-by selling to passers-by, and maybe a couple of others.
